A performance appraisal (PA), performance review, performance evaluation, development discussion, or employee appraisal is a systematic and periodic process that assesses an individual employee's job performance and productivity in relation to certain pre-established criteria and organizational objectives. Appraisal is conducted annually and it helps providing feedback to employees, counseling and developing employees, conveying and discussing compensation, job status, or disciplinary decisions. Performance appraisal inspires in performance improvement, initially at the level of the individual employee and ultimately at the level of the organization. It works as a basis for employment decisions e.g. promotions, terminations, transfers.
